After creating a sensation in the form of mind-boggling ‘Kahaani‘ in 2012 and short film ‘Ahalya‘ in 2015, Filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh seems to have mastered in writing strong female characters with shades of grey and ‘Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh’ is no exception. Teaser saw Vidya’s character urging us to believe her innocence and within seconds of police siren arriving, escapes from the sight, therefore building up a tense atmosphere, followed by employing a smartly executed hype with circulating a pamphlet across the city that featured Balan as a wanted fugitive, the official trailer finally releases and it doesn’t disappoint one bit.
Trailer opens with a Vidya’s character, who meets with a tragic accident, slips into coma. There is a mystery that surrounds her; one hand she is Bidya shown as a helpless mother in search of her kidnapped daughter Mini and on other hand, she is Durga Rani Singh, who is held responsible for kidnapping and murder. Arjun Rampal’s Indrajeet Singh, sub inspector, is assigned to investigate and find out who exactly is this lady? Is she indeed a criminal or is it just a case of mistaken identity?
Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh may look like a sequel to it’s highly successful national award winning predecessor but it is not. It has different story to narrate, new mysteries to solve with it’s unpredictable plot. Vidya Balan, who was last seen as an empathetic yet sharp cop Sarita Sarkar in June release ‘TE3N‘ – thriller film produced by Sujoy Ghosh as well – seems back to form, she is ready to bounce back in true sense and all we can expect is yet another sensational performance from her.
New entrant Arjun Rampal, with his clean shave look, looks strikingly impressive as the cop racing against time in search of the fugitive. With Rock On 2 (Sequel of Rock On that fetched Arjun his first National Award) nearing the release next month, it would be interesting to witness his wide range of performances he is ought to deliver.
It has been a while Jugal Hansraj was away from the silver screen (He was last seen as an actor in ‘Aaja Nachle‘ and directed ‘Pyaar Impossible’), nothing much is revealed about his role and how is it going to serve the plot, but trust Sujoy to have keep surprises in store for us. (Remember, Indraneil Sengupta was a mysterious element in Kahaani, that shocked us beyond belief). As expected, Kolkata is ubiquitous, treated like a main character and the soul of the film.
Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh releases on 2nd of December, 2016. Expectations are gargantuan. Terrific cast, maverick filmmaker, thriller and mysteries – all these ingredients makes the film worth waiting to be watched onscreen. It’s also a coincidence that Vidya Balan was at her remarkable best on the same day five years ago with Milan Luthria’s “The Dirty Picture” taking away all the accolades and mapping her at the top list of best actresses and thankfully continues to remains stable.
