10 Years of Omkara

Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Omkara‘ was a huge fascination in 2006 back then. Besides, known for having explicit language – that created furore over, largely keeping family audience away – The film was highly anticipated for it’s celluloid adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy play ‘Othello. {Vishal started adapting Shakespeare’s literary work from Maqbool (Macbeth – 2004) and completed the trilogy with Haider (Hamlet – 2014)}

I had seen a similar adaptation of a compelling Malayalam film ‘Kaliyattam‘ (that starred Suresh Gopi and Manju Warrier playing Othello and Desdemona) that released in 1997, however,  it had a backdrop against Hindu Theyyam performance. Omkara, on the other hand, humanized Othello with political backdrop of Uttar Pradesh’s infamous badland of Gorakhpur decorated with distinct hindi dialect of Kharibori and uncompromisingly layered characters.

Omkara went out to garner immense acclaim from critics and audience alike and won numerous awards, gifting us the committedly artistic side of Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan & Kareena Kapoor and blessed us with Konkona Sen Sharma, who had a made an impactful entry to hindi cinema with ‘Page 3’. Special mention for Deepak Dobriyal who was splendid as Rajju

Why am I celebrating a film that is so dark? What I believe is Shakespeare must’ve written this play, not with an intent to make us comfortable with dark but to make us scare of dark so that we can run towards a light. Othello depicts how hatred and jealously can ruin many lives altogether and there shall be no redemption. The lesson I particularly learned is ‘Never trust anyone blindly, subscribe for an authentication whenever required’

IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO PICTURE AN ENTIRE TWO AND HALF HOURS FILM INTO LIMITED SCREENSHOT. What I certainly did is capture interesting dialogues and conversation that made Omkara a masterpiece worth acknowledging.

As a tribute to the mastercraft director, I am celebrating Omkara- though explicit in nature – had lured many of us for it’s authenticity behind creating a incredible bad world of love, jealously and betrayal. I tried my level best to narrate the basic core of the story behind Omkara.

Disclaimer: The dialogues (written by Vishal Bhardwaj) might give you a feel of casteism and misogyny. It, by no means, endorses discrimination and doesn’t encourage viewer too.
